The birthplace of Ringo Starr in Liverpool, England was set to be demolished as part of a Liverpool City Council revitalization project on Nine Madryn Street. The City Council rethought its decision, however, when “a tide of community support” saved the home after it was deemed a “beacon of Beatlemania.” Instead, city officials say they plan to renovate the old homes rather than tearing them down and building anew.

If the community is able to maintain the home and its surroundings, and find an adequate and appropriate use for the buildings, city officials say it would mean more buildings in similar situations could be saved. While not exactly a success story for the demolition industry, preservation and reuse projects still bring many contracting jobs for engineers while also requiring inspectors, designers and others to facilitate the building’s renovation.
